Johnny Marzetti


This weeknight meal is a midwest favorite. I grew up eating this in my school cafeteria and at my dinner table. Pasta, tomato sauce and cheddar cheese - this casserole is definitely a kid-favorite!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

  • 1 diced onion

  • 2 tsp minced garlic

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (or Italian sausage)

  • 2 cans tomato sauce

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp dried basil

  • salt & pepper to taste

  • splash of balsamic vinegar

  • 3-4 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • 16 oz. dried elbow macaroni


Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375.

  2. In a large sauce pan or skillet, over medium heat, saute onion in olive oil until translucent. Add garlic and cook until fragrant.

  3. Add ground beef. Brown. Drain.

  4. Stir in tomato sauce, herbs, salt & pepper, and splash of vinegar. Bring to a simmer.

  5. Add 2 cups of shredded cheddar, stirring constantly until melted.

  6. Meanwhile cook pasta to al dente in well salted boiling water and then drain.

  7. Pour cooked pasta into a 9x13 baking dish. Add in the meat sauce. Top with an additional 1-2 shredded cheddar cheese.

  8. Bake for 30 minutes or until hot and bubbling around the edges.
