Our family has a tradition - every fall we head to our local apple orchard to go apple picking.

This is something we have been doing for 13 years now. Since my oldest was a newborn.

Our first year in the fields he was just a few weeks old. As a brand new mom I was desperate to make some memories and create new traditions for our little family of 3.

I still remember holding his tiny squishy face up next to the tree. He wasn’t even old enough to smile, but that didn’t stop me from taking more than a hundred photos (cue Justin’s eye roll!).

Since then our family has grown…and grown. Instead of a sedan, we drive a huge mega van to that same apple orchard each year.

The amount of apples I lug home has grown too.

This year we brought home over 50 lbs. of apples!

Honestly my kids will gobble most of these up in the coming weeks - no problem. So I toss half of them in our extra refrigerator downstairs.

The other 25 lbs. I use for recipes - applesauce, apple butter, apple crisp, apple cake… the list goes on and on!

This applesauce recipe is one that I’ve been using for several years now. I love it’s simplicity. just toss it in the instant pot, set it, and forget it.

Ingredients

  • 5 lbs. apples (peeled, cored, & diced)

  • 1 cup apple cider

  • 2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Directions

1. Peel, core, & dice 5 lb. of apples (this is the most time consuming part of the recipe, everything is easy peasy after this step!). Consider using a counter top corer/slicer like this one to speed up the process.

2. Place apples in instant pot with 1 cup apple cider.

3. Add 2 tsp cinnamon (optional).

4. Close instant pot lid, setting valve to sealing. Pressure cook on high for 10 minutes.

5. Do a natural release (15 minutes).

6. Release any remaining pressure. Carefully open lid.

7. Use an immersion blender to gently sauce the cooked apples to desired consistency.

8. Serve warm or place in refrigerator and serve cold. Yields 8+ cups.

Can I Freeze Applesauce?

This applesauce freezes very well for up to 6 months.

Place in a plastic storage container, freezer bag, or canning jar.

I have also made this applesauce and placed it in freezer safe reusable baby food pouches. This is a wonderful solution for homemade baby food on the go!
